As is now almost traditional, one of the workshops at The Autonomous Main Event 2024 was dedicated to the European research and development community. This Spotlight Session was led by TTTech’s Innovation Projects and Funding Management team.

Titled “Driving the Future: The Rise of Software-Defined Vehicles,” The Autonomous Spotlight Session at our Main Event was a resounding success. The session brought together automotive experts, researchers, industry professionals, and European policymakers to address the radical transformation of development processes with software playing a central role in future cars. In particular, the participants discussed the role of innovation and the European perspective.

Participants delved into the role of innovation and examined the European perspective on these advancements.

Reiner John (AVL) kicked off the session with a visionary talk on a human-centric future, emphasizing the fusion of industrial domains and the coexistence of highly automated and less automated systems. Dr. Lemke from the European Commission discussed the future of European competitiveness and the critical role of software-defined vehicles (SDVs). He highlighted the need for common European projects on SDVs, where scale, standardization, and collaboration will make a difference.

Andreas Eckel (TTTech) introduced the EU project Hardware Abstraction Layer for Software-Defined Vehicles (HAL4SDV), which aims to harmonize SDV efforts across Europe, creating a comprehensive SDV ecosystem while leveraging existing national projects and international R&D activities. Dr. Georg Stettinger (Infineon) presented the EU AIthena project, focusing on explainable AI (XAI), addressing data, models, and testing aspects.

Finally, Dr. Stephane Dreher, head of CCAM, provided updates on CCAM research, innovation, and demonstrations, and highlighted future calls on Vehicle Technologies and Key Enabling Technologies. The session concluded with a lively discussion on SDV challenges and future collaborations.

At The Autonomous, we strongly believe that by uniting experts and policymakers, we’re ensuring that safety remains at the forefront of autonomous mobility and software-defined vehicles, bridging the gaps and driving a sustainable future for all.
